Kaal - 499 and counting
Kaal - 499 and counting is the story of a serial killer that went unnoticed for 27 years - Chapter 1 (Image: Generated using Dall-E)

“Breach! Breach! Breach!” I entered the house with my team, only to find an elderly couple sitting in a state of shock. We were all perplexed.

“Where is he?” My question seemed to confuse them even more.

“Where is he? We saw him come in here!”

The old man was visibly shaken. “You are mistaken, Inspector Sahib. I live here with my wife. There is no one else,” the couple looked at us with fear in their eyes.

“I’m talking about the owner of the society. We’ve seen him come here multiple times. Where is he? It would be better if you told us.” My frustration was growing, but my question had a strange effect on them. The colour drained from their faces as soon as I mentioned him.

“Kaal? Why would he come here? Even if he has, we will rather die than tell you where he went. We are not afraid of you, Sahib. He is more dangerous…” I could hear the strain in the old man’s voice.

“Sir! Sir! Sir! I’ve found it! I’ve found the room! There’s a basement. Come, sir!” Inspector Tushar came running, breathless, having discovered the hidden layer. Until then, we had no idea there were basements beneath the houses.

“What basement? What are you talking about?” the bewildered old man questioned Tushar. We were even more stunned. By the expressions on their faces, it was clear they knew nothing about any basement.

Upon entering the basement, the scene was more baffling than I had anticipated. Within minutes, what we believed to be a terrorist organisation turned into something far more terrifying—a horrifying secret that had been lurking in that society for decades. This is the story of an unknown serial killer… Kaal.

Hello… My name is Rajeev Khatri. I am posted as a Special Detective in the Major Crime Investigation Unit (MCIU) in New Delhi, India. Most of you might not have heard of this department because we do not handle ordinary crimes. Instead, our work revolves around serial killers, terrorist organisations, and other national security threats. I will narrate the story of one of the most heinous serial killers in Indian crime history.

The code name of the case is “49 and Counting,” and it is still under investigation as the killer remains at large. He calls himself Kaal, a name we learned after our first raid a few months back. His story is only possible to tell because of his vast collection of handwritten journals, photographs, and other materials, which I will elaborate on later.

The story of Kaal unfolded over four decades, and we only became aware of it in 2017. It took any investigation agency 27 years to discover that a serial killer had been living among us—a serial killer who had murdered 49 people, as far as we knew, during the initial days of the investigation. No one knew anything about him or who his victims were. The more his story unravelled, the more horrifying and unbelievable it became.
