Kaal - 499 and counting is the story of a serial killer that went unnoticed for 27 years - Chapter 3 (Image: Generated using Dall-E)

The only option was to follow him day and night. After over six months of surveillance, we discovered that he visited house number 212 daily, entering through the back door. Then, on 8th August, the day before the raid, he noticed one of our officers and, in the officer’s words, “literally vanished into the thick series of gardens surrounding the houses.” We were unsure if he had truly spotted us or was just being paranoid.

I had a day off the next day, so I asked Inspector Tushar to lead the team. Once my team was certain that he wouldn’t return, they decided it would be best to raid the place without further delay. We were all eager to uncover what exactly he was up to inside. I joined the team just minutes before we breached the house. As soon as we entered through the front door, the whole team was shocked. The house was occupied by an elderly couple who had no idea that Kaal visited the house every day!

We were confused and began searching the house. No one could find anything, and it started to frustrate me. I kept asking them about him, and it was only then that we learned they knew him as Kaal. According to the couple, the back door had been locked in for years, and they practically never used it.

Suddenly, Tushar came rushing in, shouting that he had found the basement, which was another shock for the couple as they had no idea there was a basement! They thought there was just some space for plumbing and such. According to them, there wasn’t enough room for more than one person to crawl under. This was what Kaal had told them, and they had no reason not to believe him.

When we reached the backyard, we saw what Tushar had discovered: a door leading to a hidden basement. I asked Sub Inspector Umang to call the rest of the team. We had to be extremely cautious, as the basement could have been rigged. Since we thought there was a terrorist organisation involved, expecting a trap was only natural. But there was nothing. For some reason, I had a gut feeling that we would need more people, and I was not wrong. Breaking down the door was no easy task. We had to use specially developed charges to break it down while ensuring nothing inside was destroyed.

Upon entering the basement, we all expected to find evidence of a terrorist organisation. However, the story took a different turn. Every corner made my stomach churn further. The couple living above this room had no idea what horror was stored beneath their feet. When I told them what we had found, I could see the terror on their pale faces as they realised, they had been living above the record room of a serial killer.
