Kaal: 499 and Counting
Kaal - 499 and counting is the story of a serial killer that went unnoticed for 27 years - Chapter 7 (mage: Generated using Dall-E)

Our first goal was to ensure all evidence was secure. My team made multiple copies of everything, and the original documents, files, journals, photographs, etc., were sent to the evidence locker for safekeeping. Several teams were formed to work on different aspects of the case. Though we hoped to solve it in a couple of months, things didn’t turn out as we anticipated, and soon you’ll understand why I’m saying that.

Ritu and I left home early and reached the station on the second day. The team was already there. The replica room was ready, and SI Rajeshwari took charge of the war room. I asked everyone to go through the copy of the first journal up to the point that Ritu and I had read. I had never seen my team with such expressions on their faces. Every person was serious, including the couple who were often referred to as the clowns of the team.

With everyone on the same page, I started reading the rest of the journal.

19 January 1990

Today was my parents’ funeral. Everyone thought we were robbed and the robbers killed my parents. After some minor rituals, they were buried at the family burial ground. All my grandparents and even extended family members are buried there. It’s like a family gathering of the living and the dead every time someone dies in our family. Cruel to think, but very satisfying for me. I like going there often. I feel proud that no one around me has such beautiful graves for their family members. The dead in my family rest there. I like sitting next to the graves, and now I can sit next to my parents whenever I want. It’s such a calming thought.

The only problem is, I don’t know how to find anything at home or buy something from the market. The servants are there, but Ammi used to tell them what to buy and how much to buy. Now, if I have to tell them, I’m sure I would kill them one by one someday, and I don’t want to lose any of them. They’re good at their work and know I like silence. Rampal, the head servant, might have some idea about managing the kitchen. I’ll tell him he has to manage. Money isn’t a problem, anyway. Perks of having wealthy dead parents.

I need to find a way to manage other things as well. It’s a vast place, and I don’t know what I’ll do or how I’m going to manage everything. Then there’s the business too. Why did Abba have to build such a large empire? One business was enough. Was killing both of them a mistake? I wouldn’t have killed her. But she came in the way. I had to. I had to. There was no other choice…

Now I have to manage all of this mess. It’s killing my mood. It was so good until I stayed around the graves. Coming back to the room is hurting me. I want to kill someone, but who? There’s no one around, and any more deaths in the house, even the servants’, could get me in trouble. I should sleep now. I’ll see tomorrow what I can do to control this mess.
