Kaal: 499 and Counting
Kaal - 499 and counting is the story of a serial killer that went unnoticed for 27 years - Chapter 8 (mage: Generated using Dall-E)

20 January 1990

I met Rastogi today. Man… he is annoying. But he had excellent ideas today. I had this urge to stab his eye with the pen I held. But… alas… Anyway, I’m going to hire a manager. I never thought I’d have the power to hire someone to take care of my needs. That was one of the interesting ideas Rastogi came up with. I’m not sure how much money Dad left for me, but his attorney, Khan, said I have a lot.

Another suggestion Rastogi gave was to move to the society my father owns. I’m not sure about that. It’s been under my dad’s supervision for a long time, and people know me there. If I want to move there, I’d have to throw everyone out. I can’t have people around who know me. It would just ruin my life. How would it be possible to plan to kill someone when everyone around knows me? I want new people. Everything new. I could go and bulldoze the whole society, and I think it would be much better.

Okay. It’s decided. I need to call Khan and tell him to throw everyone out. Abba used to do that. Khan was his go-to guy for everything. I remember he got someone killed with his help. I can’t forget the day I overheard their discussion about killing someone who was poking around in my father’s businesses. He was a good businessman but a cruel person. His innocent and calm face was just for show. Though I’m sure he didn’t know I saw his other side.

I sometimes wonder if I got my killer instinct from him, or if it just came out of nowhere. It couldn’t be from my mother. I know she was no less than a saint. Maybe someday, someone will listen to whatever is in my head and tell me why I’m like this. Until then, I have to forget these thoughts and concentrate on the next step. I should call Khan… Get rid of everyone and start fresh.

Khan called today and told me he had served notice to everyone to leave the society by the end of this month. His voice was all serious. I don’t know what exactly happened in society. There might be some issues, but I’m sure he would have handled that. Now I need to concentrate on hiring someone to manage things for me. There was this guy, Dhruv. He was my senior in school. I think he would be the best person. I helped him a few times. But I’m not sure how I can find him. Maybe Khan can find him.

25 January 1990

I’m unpacked at my new place. The society is entirely empty, and I hope this will be my final destination. Rastogi is not happy that I kicked everyone out. I had to promise him that I’d let new families live here. But that’s going to be on my terms. I know I need privacy. I have a lot of plans in mind that would require privacy. I’m not sure how things will turn out in the future, but if I want to let my urges have free rein, I have to make sure no one interferes in my life.

Dhruv came today. He was pleasant to me. He’s currently working somewhere and didn’t want to leave that job. But if you’re getting double the money and half the work, you would change jobs. And guess what? He agreed. I’m not sure how we’re going to work things out in the future, but I’m sure he’s going to be a lot of help.

I need to rest. There’s a lot to do in the next few days. Dhruv will join from the first, and before that, I need to finalize a few things. First, I need to talk to Khan about the terms and conditions for the tenants. I’m not sure how I’ll convince him of the conditions I’m thinking of. I think he would react to them. But I won’t let him or anyone ruin my plan that’s been cooking since this morning. I’ll change my life, and I think the lives of a lot of other people.

“Sir, this attorney Khan might be the same person we’ve had under surveillance for the last three months. Should we detain him?” Tushar almost jumped from his chair.

“No, not right now. Let’s study this Kaal further. Maybe in a day or two. At least we should have some questions in mind before we detain Khan. It’s all scattered in my head,” I wanted to make sure we were prepared with the right questions. There was no time to waste.

“You should all go home and rest. We’ll meet tomorrow. Tushar, make a list of people he had contact with from the beginning and track them. Make sure that when and if we need to call them for questioning, we have all the information in hand.”

The day wrapped up with stress on everyone’s faces. Though we hadn’t come across any significant developments in the case through the journals yet, everyone had the same gut feeling that we would uncover horrible things every day.
